Dear Residents of Melville,

The past year has been marked by excitement and activity within the MRA, with a wave of new, enthusiastic volunteers joining our ranks. The recent pavement competition (you can view the winning video on our Facebook page!) and our involvement in Mandela Day to support the local charity, Hotel Hope, provide a glimpse of the positive momentum we aim to build upon in 2024 to revitalize community life in Melville. If you have ideas or are interested in joining our team, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

The Land Use, Liquor, and Heritage portfolios have been diligently at work, managing numerous applications for changes in our suburb. We encourage you to consider signing the petition to temporarily halt new liquor licenses until the Liquor Board can conduct an audit on the existing 60+. Our portfolio teams have been strengthening relationships with property owners, making substantial progress in collaboration with relevant authorities and the council. Notably, Julia Fish, a dedicated Land Use volunteer, played a pivotal role in establishing the Joburg Community Collective. Through this initiative, we actively collaborate with 45+ other Resident Associations and Community Groups, collectively working towards restoring Joburg to a world-class city.

We express our gratitude to the Champions of Melville, Danny Nunes, and CREASS, for their efforts in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of Melville. If you know of any areas that require attention, please inform us, and our new Physical Environment committee will be in touch.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Residents Association, striving to enhance Melville for all who reside, work, and play here. Melville, with its natural beauty in the Koppies, well-kept pavements, and vibrant art scene, is truly a gem in Joburg. I am thrilled to pass the torch to Kerry Hibberd, confident that she will further enrich the Melville community with her genuine care and enthusiasm for the suburb. I wish Kerry the very best in this exciting new role.

If you are keen on contributing to your community, consider joining the MRA. There are various volunteer opportunities available. For more information, please email us at mra@ilovemelville.co.za.

As we enter the festive season, please prioritize safety in all aspects of your life. Ensure the security of your home, family, pets, and community.

The Melville Residents Association Committee extends warm wishes for a safe and joyous festive season.

Best regards,
Kelsey Glennon, on behalf of the MRA Committee
